Kids Zone Class 3

The children contributed their views on maths teaching at Stanbury...

Maths @ Stanbury

Assembly

At Stanbury School Mr Swinbourne sometimes ask the children questions about Numeracy.

One time Mr Swinbourne spelt out the word Numeracy and the children had to think of words to do with maths,

beginning with the letters N U M E R A C and Y.

Games and Puzzles

Some of the Numeracy work is done through games and puzzles, for example: chess, draughts and dominoes.

Warm ups

Mrs Schofield warms them up by saying times tables whilst dancing to the music and also they do Tae Kwan Do,

Tai Chi and stretches.

Calculations

They think of calculations and then get the answer by working it out step by step. The children are helped when stuck.

Multiplication

They do 10 by 10s as well as add, takeaway, divide and multiply. They also do times tables and square numbers.

Shape and measure

At Stanbury School they learn measure by looking at rulers and scale. They also learn shape by looking at them carefully.

Data handling

Stanbury School in data handling usually get on very well and understand. They know perfectly well how to use graphs.

Fractions, decimals and %s

The pupils at Stanbury School are learning about fractions, decimals and also percentages. They have lots of mathematical

games to do with decimals, fractions and percentagess. However, they also have real life problems which help them to

learn more about maths.

Word problems

They do problems in maths. They work out the first step and the rest follow. To help them with the problems they underline

the important words.

Lessons

In Stanbury School maths is enjoyable for all children. They learn Numeracy by playing games and solving problems which

is fun but educational.

Teaching

There are many different teachers at Stanbury School. One teacher for two years. Their teaching skills are amazing!

Enjoyment

At Stanbury School the pupils have fun learning maths. Their teachers make their lessons full of enjoyment.

Conclusion

As you can see Stanbury School makes maths fun for everyone. There are different ways of learning and Stanbury uses

every one of them.

Together Class 3 have written this seasonal poem:

Mist

Who can you see approaching down the valley,
Seeking its first victim, creeping mysteriously,
Escaping from the sunlight and capturing the ground?

Who do you see taunting the world ahead,
Making ghosts appear to devour us all, chasing its prey,
Generously freezing your land and pondering how
to retrieve its next victim?

Who do you feel recycling you to a human ghost?
Who do you want to disappear?

What I enjoyed about this afternoon...

I enjoyed all the activities we did. My best one was obstacle course. I found out I could balance very well on a bench. I could run fast in the running race. I found out I could bat very good. I am getting better at dribbling a ball. I enjoyed doing bowling, knocking them down adn seeing how many are left. I liked going under the tunnel, banging my head on the tunnel, as I'm going through. Everyone was cheering me on as I got some goals in the football. When the ball was thrown I could hit it each time.

by Jack Bancroft

What I liked about this afternoon was the obstacle course outside. I learnt that I can fit in very small places. I could already run faster than all my team in the running challenge. I also found out that I could catch the ball in the bat and ball. On the obstacle course inside it was hard not to hit your head on the chairs and obstacles tunnel. I built up my balancing ability on the bench. In dribbling I got my dribbling ability up and I whizzed round all of the cones in seconds. In basketball I got three points but I got how to throw the ball in to the net. I used the chest pass right to the net. In bowling I scored nine altogether. I liked every one of the activities this afternoon.

What I liked: I liked looking after the little ones and seeing them doing different things as well.

What I learned: I learned to do jobs properly, and agreeing with other people, and being friends with them a bit better than before.

by Alex Fryer

Today I learnt how to look after reception. I have enjoyed everything today.

by Oliver

I learnt yesterday that if you cheer people on you make them less shy. I enjoyed it when the little ones really enjoyed it.

by Ella Thompson

I enjoyed that everybody worked as a team. I learned more about reception and their names.

by Liam F

I enjoyed the first outside course when you went under that tunnel.

by James

I enjoyed it when my team were working together.

by Ryan

What I learnt is that little children aren't easy to handle without friends helping.

by Jake

I liked being a team leader because you were not only being relied on by the teachers but also by the little children.

Alien Invasion

When aliens invaded Stanbury School during literacy week at the beginning of this half-term, Class 3 wrote some excellent vivid descriptions of the event...

As I peeled back the silver covering anxiously, I saw the blue egg under the silver covering. The blue of the egg was like the face of an angry man.

It began to crack, I could hear a deafening screech. My heart stopped! A compelling smell hung over me like sweaty feet. With a forceful pang the egg completely opened with a suffocating rumble. There was the baby alien! A green liquard oozed out of it. I felt so scared, tence I could hardly move! This is one day I will never forget.

by Alice Watts

As I peeled back the silver covering I saw blood squirting out. If I hadn't have dodged, I would have been attacked by it, and who knows what could have happened then? I continued, though shaking wearily with fright, and carefully started to see more of its body. It looked so vulnerable, unable to protect itself. It had only been uncovered a few minutes ago, but it was already developing profusely...

A sudden wave of unbearable smell flew to my nose. I stepped back wearily, keeping my eye in contact with its. Its beady eyes followed me wherever I went.

I heard... nothing. It was as quiet as a mouse. Maybe quieter. Unwearily quiet...

I hadn't felt what it was like. But then it pounced, grabbing my arm, nipping the skin on my arm.

'Your time has come,' it said to me, and then it grabbed me and I fell to the ground...
