April 7, 2006 What a great Spring term it has been for FOSS. We started the year with the inaugural Cake Raffle, which proved to be very popular with the children, and raised a terrific £80. Thanks to the cake-makers (whose efforts were particularly appreciated by the winners), to the staff for organising the draw (with apologies for the disruption to Tuesday's normal proceedings), and to the kids themselves for entering wholeheartedly into the spirit of the occasion. Same again next year?
The perennially popular Easter Fair was held on Friday 31 March straight after school. It was quite an intense hour, extremely well supported, and everyone had a great time. Well done to Class 3 for organising so many different (and very entertaining) activities for the children in Class 2, 1 and Reception. FOSS had several fund-raising items of our own: the ever-popular cake stall, a bric-a-brac and book stall and, of course, the tombola. (At one point there was a 10-minute queue for the tombola – what an achievement!) We also ran a raffle with a beautiful Easter cake made by Joanne Kaye as the star prize. Over 400 tickets were sold, so it obviously hit the spot.
Along with the usual refreshments, we also sold slices of a delicious simnel cake made by Judith Bradford, which proved to be a bit of a learning exercise as well (it was topped by not 12 but 11 balls of marzipan, representing the eleven true disciples). According to a website I checked out a really good simnel cake has a layer of delicious sticky marzipan in the centre. Judith's did, so well done for getting it spot on.
We raised a fantastic £385, so a huge thank you to everyone who donated cakes, bric-a-brac, prizes, etc., to everyone who helped out on the day and, of course, to everyone for turning up to support the event. (Interestingly, it took us less than an hour to raise this £385. This represents an annual revenue of about £800,000. Maybe we should take it up full time!)
Future EventsFinally a reminder of some dates for your diary for up-coming FOSS events for the rest of the year: Friday 19 May (evening) – Ladies' and Children's Fashion Show Simply Clothes will once again be kitting out our very own team of catwalk supermodels with the latest in summer wear for women and children. FOSS gets a percentage of everything you buy, so don't miss this opportunity to spend spend spend! [I never thought I'd hear myself saying that.] Thursday 25 May (7.30pm) – next FOSS Meeting Do come along and meet everyone, have a glass of something refreshing and help plan future events. Sunday 16 July (afternoon/evening) – Sponsored Walk and Barbecue … with strawberries and cream for afters, and probably a pig race to follow. What better way to spend a mid-summer Sunday afternoon/evening? The weather will, of course, be as perfect as it was last year.
See you there! George Bingham (Chair) (george.bingham@btconnect.com)
