Geography

Subject Rationale

At Stanbury Village School, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, foster global awareness, and deepen understanding of the diverse world we live in. Following the National Curriculum and enriched by the Kapow Primary Geography programme, our curriculum helps pupils to explore the relationship between people, places, and environments — locally, nationally, and globally.

The curriculum is structured around recurring key themes — including locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork — which are revisited throughout the key stages. This spiral curriculum model supports progression and retention, ensuring pupils build on prior learning and develop increasingly sophisticated geographical understanding and vocabulary.

At the heart of our Geography teaching is enquiry. Each unit poses a big question, prompting pupils to think critically, analyse sources, interpret maps and data, and draw informed conclusions. The curriculum includes practical fieldwork opportunities and promotes the use of atlases, digital mapping tools, and visual representations to develop spatial awareness and investigative skills.

Kapow Primary supports teacher delivery through high-quality planning, knowledge-rich resources, and CPD videos, enabling all staff to teach Geography with confidence. Lessons are inclusive, engaging, and relevant to pupils’ lives, encouraging them to reflect on global issues such as sustainability, migration, and climate change. Through Geography, we aim to shape thoughtful, informed individuals who understand their role in and responsibility to the wider world.
