PSHE
Subject Rationale
At Stanbury Village School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to nurture the whole child by developing their social, emotional, and mental well-being alongside their understanding of relationships, health, and citizenship. Informed by the expertise of subject specialists, our curriculum aligns closely with the National Curriculum and the SCARF framework, ensuring that pupils have every opportunity to build essential life skills, develop resilience, and become confident, responsible individuals.
Our curriculum, based on the SCARF scheme of work, is carefully structured to provide a sequential and progressive journey through key themes such as Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, and Friendship. These themes are revisited with increasing depth and complexity in a spiral curriculum model, allowing pupils to build on prior knowledge and embed essential skills for emotional literacy, self-awareness, and positive relationships.
Critical thinking, reflection, and personal decision-making are deeply embedded within our PSHE lessons, empowering pupils to make informed choices and develop a strong sense of identity and wellbeing. The practical, discussion-based, and experiential nature of SCARF lessons encourages active engagement and helps pupils to connect learning with their own experiences and the wider world.
Recognising that some teachers may feel less confident delivering sensitive topics, the SCARF scheme provides comprehensive support, including detailed lesson plans, engaging pupil videos, and guidance for differentiation to ensure all pupils can access and benefit from the curriculum. This robust support framework guarantees the delivery of a high-quality PSHE education that promotes progression, well-being, and achievement for every pupil at Stanbury Village School.
