Modern Foreign Languages - French

Subject Rationale - French

Teaching French supports the National Curriculum’s goal of developing pupils’ communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It helps students’ express ideas, learn grammar and vocabulary, and build confidence in using another language. French also fosters cultural awareness by introducing pupils to French-speaking countries and global perspectives. Overall, learning French enhances students’ communication, critical thinking, and prepares them for future opportunities in a connected world.

Lessons are designed to inspire and motivate children to learn a new language they can use in the future. They focus on developing practical communication skills and encourage pupils to succeed in their learning. By fostering cultural awareness and curiosity, the curriculum helps build a strong foundation for future language study. Aligned with the National Curriculum, lessons follow a progressive approach to developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, often incorporating engaging activities such as songs, rhymes, and stories to make learning enjoyable and accessible for all abilities.

This program works in line with Twinkl for resources and additional learning tools. Recognising that some teachers may lack confidence in their own language skills, Twinkl provides comprehensive support, including subject-specialist-led pupil videos, multiple teacher videos to develop subject knowledge, and differentiated guidance to ensure all pupils can access and enjoy the lessons. This approach guarantees the delivery of high-quality French education that promotes progression and achievement for all pupils.
