Physical Education

Subject Rationale

At Stanbury Village School, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum aims to inspire every child to enjoy being active and to understand the importance of health, fitness, and wellbeing. We want our pupils to develop confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of physical activity through a wide range of fun, engaging, and inclusive experiences.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for PE and is carefully planned to ensure children build their skills and knowledge as they move through school. From the Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6, pupils take part in activities that develop their balance, coordination, teamwork, and strategic thinking. They learn and apply these skills across different areas such as games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities.

Learning in PE is designed to be progressive, with key skills revisited and built upon over time. This allows children to grow in confidence and competence, not only in their physical abilities but also in their personal and social development. Lessons encourage pupils to challenge themselves, make healthy choices, and develop positive attitudes towards staying active for life.

Teamwork, fairness, and respect are central to our approach. Pupils are encouraged to take on different roles—such as performers, coaches, or team leaders—helping them to develop leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Reflection and goal-setting are also woven into lessons, supporting children to recognise their progress and take pride in their achievements.

To ensure consistently high-quality teaching, our PE curriculum is supported by the Twinkl PE scheme, which provides clear progression, engaging lesson ideas, and resources to help all teachers deliver active and inclusive sessions. This enables every child, regardless of ability, to participate fully, make progress, and experience success in physical education.

At Stanbury Village School, we believe that PE plays a vital role in helping our pupils to become healthy, confident, and motivated individuals—ready to lead active and fulfilling lives.
