Outdoor Learning at Stanbury Village School

At Stanbury Village School, we believe that learning should extend beyond the classroom walls. We love to go outdoors and learn, as outdoor learning needs to be purposeful, developmental, and most importantly, fun!

Enhancing Our Curriculum

Outdoor learning is not just an added bonus; it is an integral part of our curriculum. We ensure that our outdoor activities enhance the learning experiences within the classroom, providing pupils with opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of the subjects they study and encourages a love for learning.

Formal Outdoor Learning Days

We are excited to participate in at least four formal outdoor learning days per class throughout the academic year. During these days, we collaborate with Joe from Within the Wood, who brings a wealth of expertise in outdoor education. You can learn more about Joe and his work on his Facebook Page 'Within The Wood UK'. These days are designed to engage pupils in hands-on learning experiences that are both educational and enjoyable.

Benefits of Outdoor Learning

Learning outside the classroom has numerous benefits for our pupils, including:

  • Enhanced Well-Being: Outdoor learning promotes physical activity, which is crucial for overall health. Being in nature has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, contributing to improved mental well-being (source: DfE - The Reading Framework, July 2023).
  • Improved Learning Outcomes: Studies indicate that outdoor learning can lead to better retention of information, as pupils are more engaged when they can connect their learning to the environment around them. This hands-on approach fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills (source: EEF - Making the Best Use of Teaching Assistants).
  • Progression in Skills: Outdoor learning provides unique opportunities for pupils to develop a range of skills, including teamwork, communication, and resilience. These experiences are essential for their personal and academic growth (source: DfE - The Reading Framework, July 2023).

Embracing the Outdoors

At Stanbury, our children can often be found swapping their uniforms for rainproof coats, pants, and even covering themselves in mud! This playful approach to learning encourages creativity and exploration, allowing pupils to immerse themselves in their surroundings.

We also recognise the importance of embracing our local area and environment, given our rural and stunning location. By utilising the natural beauty and resources around us, we enrich our outdoor learning experiences and help pupils develop a deeper appreciation for the world they live in. This connection to the environment fosters a sense of moral responsibility to care for and look after our surroundings, aligning with the British values of respect and responsibility.

Our outdoor learning experiences are designed to be memorable, ensuring that pupils not only learn but also create lasting memories. The hands-on nature of these activities makes learning more impactful and enjoyable, allowing pupils to connect with the world around them in meaningful ways. By instilling a sense of stewardship for the environment, we empower our pupils to become conscientious global citizens who understand the importance of sustainability and the impact of their actions on the planet.

Outdoor learning at Stanbury Village School is a vital component of our educational philosophy. By embracing the outdoors, we enhance our curriculum and provide pupils with enriching experiences that promote well-being and academic success. We look forward to many more adventures outside the classroom as we continue to foster a love for learning in our pupils.
