Science
Subject Rationale
At Stanbury Village School, our Science curriculum is designed to promote curiosity, enquiry, and a deeper understanding of the natural and physical world. Grounded in the National Curriculum and supported by the Kapow Primary Science scheme, our approach ensures that pupils develop secure scientific knowledge and the ability to think, question, and work scientifically.
The curriculum follows a spiral structure that revisits core scientific concepts — including biology, chemistry, and physics — with increasing depth and complexity. In each unit, pupils build knowledge while developing key scientific enquiry skills such as observation, prediction, testing, data analysis, and evaluation. This enables pupils to learn how science works in practice and understand its application in everyday life.
Science at Stanbury is rich in hands-on experiences, with practical investigations at the heart of each unit. Pupils are encouraged to explore and ask questions, fostering a sense of wonder and excitement. Lessons are designed to build confidence, encourage independent thinking, and promote resilience through trial and error.
Each unit includes vocabulary-rich content, knowledge organisers, and opportunities for retrieval and assessment to support long-term understanding. Kapow Primary also offers teacher support materials and CPD resources, including subject knowledge videos, ensuring consistency and quality of teaching across all classes. Our curriculum empowers pupils not only to understand scientific ideas but also to apply them critically and creatively in the wider world, preparing them to be informed and thoughtful citizens.
